Academic Support Services

Every student has the chance to succeed thanks to our personalized support and general assistance. The following services are coordinated by the Office of Student Services.
Tutoring
Tutoring is offered to all students who are either having difficulty in a class or need additional academic challenge. Tutoring sessions take place in the mornings before classes begin, during the school day when students have free periods, and in the late afternoon after classes have finished. Students are tutored in small groups, as whole classes, and one on one.
Students can be referred for mandatory tutoring by their teachers, advisors, and the Student Services Head. Students on Academic Probation are required to attend tutoring sessions. Department chairs appoint teachers to tutor individual subjects and arrange the tutoring schedules. In addition, some teachers hold their own informal tutoring hours.

At various times during the school year, there are regularly scheduled tutoring sessions for the following subjects.
- Calculus
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Science terminology
Academic Advising
Academic advising is an integral component of the UPP and helps bring together all the various facets of the program. All UPP faculty members serve as advisors. Every student is assigned an academic advisor and is required to meet the advisor three times during each semester: the first week, week after mid-term exams, and the week after final exams. Students are encouraged to meet with their advisors more frequently as issues and questions arise.
Academic advisors are the “go to” person for any kind of academic-related issue. Because of this, the academic advisors perform a number of very important activities that help their advisees to be successful at the UPP.
- Sign a Learning Contract with their advisees
- Refer advisees for tutoring
- Explain UPP policies and chains of communication
- Help advisees establish educational goals and plans to meet those goals
- Help advisees understand the Student Handbook
- Refer advisees to the appropriate office to take care of any issues
- Advise on any concerns about grades and attendance
- Refer advisees to the Student Services Office for counseling
