Seven Students are Elected to Student Association

The UPP held its second annual Student Association elections on Monday, November 10. Candidates for student government gave campaign speeches to the student body at a student assembly in the King Faisal Palace on Saturday, November 8. The speeches were the high point of the campaign that began on November 5.
Eleven students competed for seven seats in the Student Association. More than 80% of students voted in the election.
The Student Association is governed by a Constitution written by last year’s Student Association. It is very similar to typical student government constitutions in American universities, with special adaptations to accommodate the unique situation of the UPP. The responsibilities of the Student Association members are to talk with students to understand their ideas and suggestions for improving the UPP. They write, discuss, and vote on recommendations to forward to the UPP administration. A mandatory Student Association meeting is held each week, and all students are welcome to attend. Time is set aside in each meeting for students to voice their concerns to the student government – an open forum.
The President of Student Association is Ahmed Alshibi. He received the highest number of votes in the election. The Vice President of the Student Association is Saad Al-Kabab. He received the second highest number of votes and accepted the position in the Student Association orientation meeting on November 17. The job of the President is to present Student Association recommendations to the administration and to appoint students to committees to work on special projects. The job of the Vice President is to lead the weekly meetings according to rules of order and to make sure that all recommendations of the Association are well-written and clear.
Information about the Student Association will be updated regularly on the UPP web site.
Mr. Dana Forsythe, Student Services Head, is the UPP administrator responsible for providing guidance and support for the Student Association.
